Customs officers seized 454 kg of excise-free tobacco

Customs officers detained 282 kg of baled tobacco on the leaf and 172 kg of cut tobacco without paid excise duty.

On February 12, 2021, at about 8:10 pm, customs inspectors from the Operational Control Sector – Svishtov Unit of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department – Danube carried out an inspection in a house in a village in the Pleven region. 172 kg of cut tobacco and 282 kg of bale tobacco were found at the address. In one of the rooms the customs officers found a cutting machine. It was established that in the yard of the property, surrounded by vegetation, the tobacco leaves were moistened before they were cut. Another 3 metal barrels, 4 gas burners and 3 gas cylinders, which are believed to have been used in tobacco processing, were found on the spot. The owner of the property declares that the excise goods are his. Police officers from ODMVR-Pleven assisted in the inspection. Pre-trial proceedings have been instituted in the case according to the inventory of the Territorial Department of the Ministry of Regional Development – Danube under the supervision of the Pleven District Prosecutor’s Office.

About a month ago, in another case, customs officers from the Svishtov Operational Control Unit of the Danube Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department seized 400 kg of tobacco, also without paid excise duty, during an inspection of a property located in a village in Byala Slatina municipality.
