19,000 pieces (950 boxes) of cigarettes were seized during an inspection of a light truck traveling from Bulgaria to Belgium through the Danube Bridge Vidin – Calafat border checkpoint. The Bulgarian customs officers from the General Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation selected for inspection a light truck with Veliko Tarnovo registration, driven by a Bulgarian citizen. He stated that he was transporting foodstuffs to Belgium and denied transporting excise goods, but on an X-ray scan, customs officers noticed a suspicious density in two places between the goods being transported. During a thorough inspection, in a suitcase and at the bottom of a box of corn sticks, they found tobacco products of four high-end brands with a total of 950 boxes, all covered with Bulgarian excise labels, and at a market price of nearly BGN 6,000. The driver stated that the cigarettes were his personally, stating also that he did not have a simplified accompanying document, according to the requirements of Art. 76a, para. 8 or Art. 76c, para. 3 of ZADS. An act for establishing an administrative violation has been drawn up in the case.
