The customs officers from TD “Yuzhna Morska” found smuggled gold jewelry for over BGN 80,000 during an inspection of a truck.
On May 11, 2021, a truck with foreign registration arrived at the Kapitan Andreevo Police Station, transporting goods from Turkey through Bulgaria to the Netherlands. Under the ‘risk analysis’ method, the vehicle driven by a Turkish national was selected for a thorough customs inspection. In the cold storage room in the driver’s cab, customs officials found that 116 rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings, all made of yellow metal, were hidden in a plastic bag. The expertise made by the expert established that the jewelry with a total weight of 736 grams was made of 21-carat gold worth BGN 83,904.
The smuggled gold jewelry and the truck were seized.
Pre-trial proceedings were instituted in the case by an investigating customs inspector under the supervision of the Haskovo District Prosecutor’s Office.
By order of the District Prosecutor’s Office – Haskovo, the driver of the truck FT, aged 39, a Turkish citizen, was prosecuted for a crime under Art. 242 para 1 b “E” of the Penal Code. A measure of restraint “guarantee” in the amount of BGN 4,000 was taken against him, as well as a “ban on leaving the borders of the Republic of Bulgaria” was imposed, except with the permission of the District Prosecutor’s Office – Haskovo.
