Customs officers found nearly 125,000 undeclared euros and more than 137,000 British pounds during three separate inspections of trucks carried out last week in the area of the Danube Bridge 2 border checkpoint. In all three cases, the undeclared currency was found in the cabs of the trucks after as the drivers have stated that they do not transfer currency above the limit set by the Currency Act – 10,000 euros.
137,410 British pounds, customs officers found during an inspection of a refrigerated truck entering the country from Romania, which was transiting from Western Europe to Iraq on 21.05.2021. In the cab of the truck, customs inspectors found the currency in denominations of 50, 20 and 10 pounds, hidden in natural cavities under the bed and in cupboard doors. The amount was divided into 20 packages, labeled with the names of various individuals.
80,000 euros were found by the customs officers in the area of the Danube Bridge 2 border checkpoint during an inspection of a refrigerated truck with Turkish registration, carried out on 16.05.2021. The money was found in the cabin and had a face value of 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros. A few hours later, around 01:00 on 17.05.2021, the customs inspectors stopped for inspection another truck with Turkish registration. Again in the cabin, customs officers found hidden euro banknotes with denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros. After counting them in the presence of the driver, it became clear that he was transporting 44,950 undeclared euros.
Drivers could not provide documents on the origin of the currency. In the three cases, acts for establishing administrative violations were drawn up.
