Customs officers from the Territorial Directorate of Burgas Customs found 4,881 kg of gold jewelry worth BGN 400,242 in a bus cache.
The vehicle with Turkish registration arrives at the Kapitan Andreevo Customs Checkpoint on November 13, 2021 at around 10.20 pm on an entry route from Turkey. The bus travels on a route from Turkey to Serbia via Bulgaria, driven by a driver, a Turkish citizen. In the customs control zone, the driver and passengers state that they have nothing to declare. The vehicle has been selected for a thorough customs inspection, including an X-ray. During the subsequent physical control, the customs inspectors found a specially built hiding place in a factory cavity located in the floor of the toilet of the bus. 30 tapes of yellow metal jewelry were taped out of the shelter. Pre-trial proceedings were instituted in the case by an investigating customs inspector under the supervision of the Haskovo District Prosecutor’s Office. The smuggled gold jewelry was seized. The driver M.D. at the age of 61 he was brought to criminal responsibility and a financial guarantee in the amount of BGN 7,000 was imposed on him.
