Undeclared gold jewelry worth over BGN 1 million was detained by customs officers

More than 10 kg of smuggled gold jewelry was found by customs officers during a search of a truck.
On March 5, 2022, around 10.20 pm, a tractor with a semi-trailer with Turkish registration arrived at the Kapitan Andreevo Ministry of Transport, transporting goods from Turkey to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Under the ‘risk analysis’ method, the vehicle is selected for a thorough customs inspection, including X-ray equipment, which shows abnormal densities in the driver’s cab. During the subsequent physical control, the customs inspectors found in the chamber and in the wall of the refrigerator, in a drawer with food and in an emergency bag a total of 31 packages packed with white paper and transparent tape containing yellow and white metal products. According to the expertise made by the expert, the jewelry with a total weight of 10,267 kg is made of 14- and 22-carat gold worth BGN 1,070,712.

The driver – a Turkish citizen and the smuggled gold jewelry were detained. Pre-trial proceedings were instituted in the case by an investigating customs inspector under the supervision of the Haskovo District Prosecutor’s Office.
